On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, the news of NBC Sports Network shutting down was discussed. During that discussion, Dave Meltzer noted that NXT’s TV contract is set to expire this October.

It was reported that larger properties like NHL, NASCAR, and EPL will move to USA Network. The Wednesday Night Hockey series could pose problems for NXT as it also airs on a Wednesday night.

Meltzer also noted that NHL’s current TV deal is also set to expire at the end of the NHL season, and there is interest from ESPN to negotiate with the NHL to broadcast games. It is likely that the NHL could agree to deals with both NBC and ESPN similar to how other major sports have agreements with other broadcasters.

Meltzer speculated if the NHL is kept under the NBC banner, it is likely that NXT is moved to either Tuesday or Thursday. He points out that this would change the whole dynamic between NXT and AEW as NXT on Wednesday nights is means for WWE and USA Network to keep AEW’s television numbers down.

However, he also pointed out the NHL is of much larger importance to NBC than the Wednesday Night Wars. If NXT were to move nights, this would obviously mean AEW Dynamite would run unopposed and be able to reach higher numbers without any wrestling competition.

Just as a fan that watches both, I'd love if NXT and AEW were on separate nights bc they're two of my favorite wrestling shows each week.

ESPN are dumber than rocks if they have no interest in the NHL.....the only league that has legit parity will get over when people get sick of the super team politics of the NBA and NFL.

It's also the best sport to watch in the pandemic.

Easy solution for NXT, put it back on the WWE Network.

Each show has their own diehard following and I swear it's like 200k or so that jump between the two shows usually.

What would the sports that take NXT's place do to AEW's number anyway? Sports running opposed to a wrestling show, usually MNF I think? always seem to be brought up when a rating is down or whatever

Good, NXT has National exposure and they fail to draw beyond 600,000 viewers due to their stubborn philosophy of appealing to a niche fanatic base.

If WCW didn’t get to be on TV anymore due to the political agenda of Jamie Keller and Time Warner-AOL executives DESPITE being the top rated shows on TNT and TBS, then NXT which got chance after chance yet failed shouldn’t.

I don't think it was a fail to draw audience because they originally thought it was going to be good. Have better storylines. However, overtime NXT became a shadow of what it once was. That is when the fans started to flip flop back and forth with it.

NXT has never drawn or contributed to the product in anyway. Not only that but it has negatively affected the product making it more workrate related.

No one that ever came out of NXT post 2010 has been a draw, they have only led to decrease in ratings.

Any other era and this show is cancelled. C level shows like WWF Superstars during the Attitude era were more productive and contributed more to the product.

NXT proves definitively that if Triple H takes over WWE they will be worse than when Vince McMahon has run it.

Moxley, Reigns, Charlotte, Banks, Bayley, Lynch, and Rollins. that's 7 who came out of NXT

So assuming NXT does moves days, Tuesday and Thursday I assume are the only options but I can't fathom WWE wanting to try a Saturday show at this point right?

Tuesdays would be fine, split up watching NXT and Impact like I do NXT and AEW currently. Thursdays would be better since no wrestling at night...but our poor 2002 rewatch :worried
