Something British. Another of the first albums I heard.

Cool, I'm glad to see a UK album get nominated. My knowledge of UK rap is limited to Skepta, slowthai, Little Simz and... I'd say that's about it. Most other artists I've heard haven't made a good enough impression to really be memorable.

I enjoy the incorporation of dance hall and electro kind of vibes that seems pretty common with UK rap. This album simultaneously feels urban and also kinda tropical, with the instrumentation, slang and vocal performance. It was a "fun" sounding album but seemed to be addressing some actual issues at the same time. However, between the accents and my lack of knowledge on British societal issues, I didn't catch a whole lot of what he was talking about.

Ital Visions was my favorite track from a straight up listening perspective. Sinny Sin Sins was perhaps a bit cliche through today's eyes but still a very well written and personal song that made me feel the most connected to the artist. Swords In The Dirt also had me bobbing my head a lot, and was a standout of the later portion of the album. I was curious what the big hit from this was, or if there was one. Apparently Witness (1 Hope) was the most successful song, so I doubled back to listen to it again and I can see how it got popular, because that particular sound immediately makes me think "early 2000s UK", although I didn't think it was particularly special. I was looking on Genius for some lyrics and noticed that Witness (1 Hope) had 51.6k views on Genius, while the next most viewed song was the next song on the tracklist, and it had only 4k views, which were probably mostly spillover from the previous song. Some of the songs have less than 1k views and oddly there are no lyrics for almost half the tracks. Seems like this is one of those albums that had its little moment at the time but didn't have staying power within the culture, which doesn’t mean anything really, I just think it's an interesting observation.

All in all, if I was rating the album, I'd probably go with like a 6.5 or so. I had no issues with the album, although there were some songs I would skip otherwise... but as a whole, it was enjoyable, just not transcendent or necessarily something that stirred up a lot of feelings in me. I still appreciate the recommendation and look forward to discovering more UK rap as time goes.

Besides Skepta and Jaykae, I’m not really familiar with a lot of UK rap. I appreciated the production quality with some nice beats and nice sounding songs but the lyrics didn’t do much for me tbh. I didn’t hate this though, I respect it but it’s probably not something I’d go out of my way to listen to again.

I went through a pretty heavy UK hip hop phase with Dizzee Rascal, Lady Sovereign, The Streets, and Tinie Tempah but was not familiar with Roots at all. The beats while basic where for the most part effective. Pretty typical flow for a this genre which is a good thing. Bashment Boogie is a decent jump off but Join the Dots was my favorite track but that because of my love of Chali 2na and his group Jurassic 5(a group who I will probably suggest an album from in here in the near future). Dub Styles is another track I really fuck with unfortunately the next two tracks missed me completely Trim Body is a track I couldn't even finish during both listens. Evil Rabbit is another track I liked it was one the more elaborate beats and def felt original. Good listen I may not visit it again but it was a good dive. I'd give it overall 6/10

@Hoss you're up again unless you wanna hold off to give @Chris time to catch up

Aight, here's my next pick for your listening enjoyment:

2015's Tetsuo & Youth by Lupe Fiasco. This is admittedly a pretty heavy duty album. Since we started this, I knew a Lupe album was an inevitability for me. Initially though, I was pondering one of his first few albums - either of the Food & Liquor albums, or The Cool, which are S-tier albums for me. While they are also pretty lyrically complex, they contain recognizable hits like Kick, Push, Superstar, Hurt Me Soul and others. But the brilliance I have always found in Lupe is how he makes songs that tell such vivid stories, or provide really interesting social commentary, but he presents it in a commercially friendly packaging. It's enjoyable to listen to, like a Kanye song, but it actually contains so much more depth. Over time, Lupe's popularity faded as he focused more on conceptual music that wasn't so radio-friendly.

This album came out in 2015 and as you can kind of perceive from the album title, it felt like a callback to the Lupe of old, with a title that even alluded to his previous Food & Liquor albums. The title also lays the foundation for the theme of the album, which is bases around life, death and rebirth, symbolized by the interludes that are named after seasons. It touches a lot on the cyclical nature of humans, and the need to break free from these cycles to experience life.

This album was one of those that dominated my listening habits for a long time, and one of the defining albums of my post-high school era. This album didn't have any radio hits, I don't imagine it was intended to, but it possesses that familiar Lupe formula. Genuinely, every song can be dissected and analyzed and even 10 years later, I still get hit with a line every now and then that I truly understand for the first time. But at the same time, this album sounds fantastic. If you didn't listen to the lyrics, you could easily think some of these songs were made for the radio. I'm not gonna lie, this is a 10/10 album for me that I suspect some probably won't be that impressed with, while hopefully at least one person feels similarly to me. :lol

As far as songs on this album, Mural is the one that has captured the most attention, because it is just a straight up rapping marathon with crazy bars that doesn't really have a clear, direct meaning, but is literally meant to serve as a mural of his thoughts, experiences and beliefs. Just a tapestry of ideas and symbolism that pretty much sets the stage for all the rest of the album. While I would say it's my favorite song on the album, and one of my all time favorite rap songs, I'm really not even sure if it's the most intricate song on the album. I don't want to spoil too much or implant thoughts, but I would definitely advise anyone who at least enjoys the album, to dig deeper into the lyrics/meaning/easter eggs of Mural, Dots & Lines, Prisoners 1&2 and The Adoration of the Magi for sure, because I just think they're really cool concepts and it's impressive to see how lyricists can construct such complex puzzles to be explored, that also just make sense on a surface level.

Anyways, enjoy.

I'm almost done with the Esoteric album, really good stuff. I'd say this is the kind of hip hop niche I get drawn to, hyper focusing on certain themes and then expanding out. The beats are the strongest part, you don't even have to listen to the lyrics most of the time for background enjoyment but then when you do, you get a lot more. God Less America is top for me so far

I will admit that as the second half of the album progressed, it did start to feel kinda long-winded. There are hardly any hooks on this album that I can recall, it's basically full speed ahead on the rapping all throughout, which is cool and pretty enjoyable, but for a full hour+, it's hard to maintain that momentum. Nonetheless, they did space things out some with a lot more skits/samples and instrumental usage on the second half. That being said, God Less America still really hit for me, it was short and sweet and full of intent. Godzilla Stomp was also a very memorable song from that second half, I gotta mention it as well.

Singling out this but this is also a complaint I've heard about Madvillainy too lol it's just Doom rap tracks a lot of times that don't stand out on their own

“First your doing Gary Numan now you’re on some Harry Truman” might be the wildest line on ESO v Japan

I am familiar with Lupe obviously but mostly just his bigger songs. And it started off great for me with Murals and Blur My Hands then kind of fell off a little bit and then pick backed up with Prisoner but all in all it just was a little to slow paced for me at times and while I didn't hate any of it it's not something I'll revisit likely. I wish I had the gift you do of being able to really express in detail how I feel about these things but I'm just not that good at the review thing lol..all in all its a 7 of 10 for me
