*By request, I’ll now be implying a somewhat harsher scale, working my way up to even over the next week or two…
Opening Segment – Vince McMahon & Guest Host Dave Batista
Vince hates on Trump here for a few minutes playing up to what Trump would do, and Vince asks the crowd if he should do the same, and says he can’t do commercials free, but offers to give the crowd their money back… but that he won’t do it. Nice heat. Then Vince talks about some 15 superstar trade. Then Vince talks about some weekly guest host thing, Vince says he’s making the first host decision, and that it’ll be Dave Batista
. Batista comes out and down to the ring (in a pretty sweet fucking suit, tbh) but it’s disgustingly distracted by his brace on his arm, and he plays to this “welcome back” shit as though he’s been gone for a year. Announces a 4-man Night Of Champions #1 contenders matches. Miz vs. Cena, and MVP vs. Triple H. Batista talks about how he wouldn’t do this tonight and wants to fight… then Orton interrupts (kinda wish he’d have let Batista talk). Why Voices when Legacy came out and not the new Legacy theme!? FUCKERS! Suck my nuts! Orton tells Dave he shouldn’t have come back (awesome heat!). He calls him a glutton for punishment, and threatens to continue the attack from before. Batista says that he can fire all of Legacy if he wants. He says that Vince told him he’d have unlimited power, and can do what he wants, and threatens to make Orton’s life a living nightmare. Orton says he barely survived 3 Stages of Hell and that he can barely walk, and Batista mocks him (decent comic) and says he won’t make Orton defend his title, but he has to worry about the trade Trump made before he was fired, and 5 new superstars are on the show, and Orton needs to face 3 of ‘em in a 3-on-1 gauntlet match.
Segment Rating: ***
I like that some of Trump’s orders stand, and that Vince is playing to heat but still somewhat siding with Triple H. I like that he stuck with this guest host thing, as it’s shaping up pretty good to be completely honest. Batista actually did pretty well on the mic for once, and “his” decisions were all pretty solid (on paper). We’ll see how they play out.
1st NOC Tournament Match – Triple H vs. MVP
Winner: Triple H
Shit, had to run out and fix something on the porch. Tune in to Triple H going for Pedigree and MVP swipes his leg and hits the Ballin’ Elbow. Goes for Player’s Boot, misses, counters Pedigree again, then hits the Player’s Boot, but Triple H kicks out. Goes for Playmaker, Triple H counters into Pedigree for the win.
Match Rating: ** (from what I saw)
A couple good reversals, but imo, it looked like WWE further pushing MVP down the drain. Why Triple H? Just bury it already and allow MVP to be in talks with being in these finals and thrust into contention!
Unified Tag Titles Match – Edge & Jericho vs. The Colons
Winner: Edge & Jericho
Edge and Jericho start off trashing the Raw crowd and talking about how they’re on all 3 brands while they have the titles. The Colons interrupts. Start off with Chris and Primo, Jericho with the advantage. Primo with some decent luchador-esque wrestling, and he takes out Jericho and Edge, then the Colons do mirrored baseball slides. *Commercial* Come back to Jericho dominating and Primo regaining momentum. Nearfall by Jericho, cutting the ring off well tagging Edge in. Edge is dominating. I’m kinda bored, which is good, because I know Edge and Jericho are displaying that they’re miles ahead of the Colons. Primo reverses Jericho’s facebuster, gets hot tag and springboard dropkick and a couple left hands and a nice swinging neckbreaker & near fall. Jericho goes for Lionsault, but Carlito moves and his’s springboard moonsault onto Jericho. Jericho ends up going for Walls of Jericho, then slingshot, but Carlito hits Edge, cross body off of turnbuckle. This match is CRAZY! Near fall. Edge in, Carlito gets backstabber, but Jericho helps. Primo kicks Jericho out, then dives onto Jericho. Carlito goes for another springboard, but Jericho pushes Primo into the rope and Carlito falls. Edge spear for the pin.
Match Rating: ***½
Edge & Jericho dominated, like I said, sorta displaying their dominance. But the young Colons showed off a fighting spirit and this match turned into some crazy action, with a crazier reaction (which should be a message to the WWE) and showed that tag wrestling is still popular. Edge & Jericho have great chemistry, and them being on all three shows (if they do what they should) could be brilliant for their careers. I’m waiting to see Christian & Bourne (maybe Bourne, seemed the only I could place) against Edge & Jericho on ECW.
2nd NOC Tourney Match – John Cena vs. The Miz
Winner: John Cena
Start off with Miz getting some brutal strikes on Cena (now they hurt!?). Cena retaliates with some decent old school slams and hip tosses and shit. Miz gets a nice boot reversal and takedown with punches, and some good kicks and stomps, and more strikes. Match is KINDA boring, but Miz is holding his own, until now. Cena with a back body and then (I think it’s his best move) fisherman suplex. Then a chinlock. Miz regains control and gets a headlock of his own, and he’s still punishing Cena with some badass kicks and hits the knee-neckbreaker, and continues to work the neck (making Miz look like a student of the game). Miz counters bulldog and does a guillotine jumping over the top rope and gets another swinging neckbreaker, then he’s beating Cena down in the corner and the ref is pulling Miz off of Cena. Intense as hell, with intense heat (I’m LOVING it). *Commercial* Back and Miz is dominating Cena, who fights out. Good reversal and clothesline by Miz, straight into mounted punching to the 4 count (good heel tactics) followed by a boot choke in the corner to another 4, and his running clothesline where he sits on the middle rope. Miz climbs, but Cena gets up and punches him and puts him on his shoulder. Miz counters with electric chair drop for a 2 count, and another 2 count. Miz pounding away and then drops some knees on Cena’s “neck” and a brutal running kick to the face of Cena, to only another 2 count. Cena goes for STF but Miz counters and locks in a sleeper taking him down. Cena is getting to his feet and falls into the corner. Miz goes for clothesline, Cena hits moves of doom. 5 Knuckle Shuffle. Throwback. Cena climbs rope, hits diving fameasser, then “locks in” STF, Miz taps
.
Match Rating: ***½
This match was incredible. I’m glad that even in defeat, Miz wasn’t buried. I wish he’d put up more fight in the STF, but it’s sorta smart in a heelish way on his behalf. Miz held his own, and had some GREAT offense against Cena, who at times looked to be struggling. Great match imo.
Backstage Segment – Legacy
So next week, The Million Dollar Man will be the guest host, and Ted’s excited. But Orton seems frustrated that it does nothing for him tonight.
Segment Rating: **
Gets a bonus star just because we find out The Million Dollar Man returns next week
.
4 Way Divas Match #1 Contender’s Match – Kelly Kelly vs. Mickie James vs. Beth Phoenix vs. Rosa
Winner: Mickie James
Lame. Beth is hot, but I miss seeing her being used as dominant. Maryse on commentary is awesome
. I love the accent. Action is boring. *snore* … *wake* Dragon sleeper, sleeper, sleeper, all applied at once. Beth cleavage, nice. Back to boring. Nevermind, good pin attempts. Maryse is being a kitty cat… callin’ Kelly Kelly hot and saying she’d prefer to face her in a pervish manner. Beth took a BRUTAL fall. Botched DDT. Mickie pin.
Match Rating: *½
Gotta give up a LITTLE bit of credit for these bitches displaying SOME good action for once, but nothing spectacular.
Big Show vs. Kofi Kingston
Winner: Draw via Double Countout
Kofi with some kicks to the legs. Big clothesline by Show. Working Kofi’s left arm/shoulder. Show dominating, obviously. Missed elbow… obviously. HUGE dropkick by Kofi, and more kicks an a nice European uppercut, then rope kick thing in the corner followed by a missile dropkick and BOOM BOOM BOOM dropkick, then his leapfrog, but Show tosses him to the outside. Slap to chest. Show into post by counter. Double countout.
Match Rating: ½*
Weak. Pointless filler. I mean, I am somewhat anticipating a future feud between these two to see how Kofi hangs with a super heavyweight, but wack shit imo.
3-on-1 Gauntlet Match – Randy Orton vs. 3 Acquired In Trade.
Winner: Mark Henry
Orton comes out moving extra gingerly, beat down. First opponent is… Evan BOURNE! Shit, so much for that team. Orton using his size, Bourne counters with his speed and unique style. Orton’s one step ahead, but Bourne’s speed and counters are a mismatch, but he can’t mount solid offense. Nice European uppercut by Orton, followed up by some stomps to the sternum and some good strikes. Bourne standing moonsault. More pin attempts and using his speed (good performance even though Orton is battered). Off the top with his diving knee attack. Up to the top again. Orton hits the ropes… SUPER RKO
!!!!! Pin by Orton. One down. Next up… JACK SWAGGER YES!!!!!!! Hellyeah @ Swagger on Raw! Finally! Swagger using his amateur background. Swagger using his swagger to get in Orton’s head. Then stands outside the ropes and gets counted out :/. Some kind of union between these two? Swagger grabs a mic, gets back in the ring, and says he’s always liked and respected Randy, and says he wanted to leave a lasting impression and they shake hands :/. Orton grinning. Nice, this might be something awesome. Could Swagger be the Enforcer? Third opponent… Mark Henry (who the fuck did ECW get!?)! Henry already has a mic. He tells Orton he’s always liked him himself, and he too has a lot of respect for him, and just like Swagger, he came here to make an impression and it’ll be a good one. Henry overpowers him, then leaves the ring like Swagger! DUDE, I know what it is ALREADY! EVERYONE HAS A PRICE! MILLION DOLLAR MAN TED DIBIASE >>>> YOUR FAVORITE SUPERSTAR OF ALL TIME! FUCK YES! No, Henry stops the count, gets back in the ring, and Orton drops to his knees begging him not to continue the match. Henry laughs and chokes him to bring him to his feet and tosses him around and starts pounding away. Body splash in the corner. Orton with a huge slap, Henry with a headbutt to Orton’s face. Henry’s getting a crazy pop. RKO reversal. World’s Strongest Slam. Pin. Henry Wins!
Match Rating: ***½
Mostly for how it builds up the future. I liked seeing Bourne mount some offense, even though Orton’s hurt. Then Swagger’s display could lead to a couple possible routes. Henry coming in with fan favor and dominating Orton and going for the win and getting it sets him up for a nice run on Raw imo. Batista comes out and he and Henry act like they have some respect. Glad Orton took at least one loss, and I’m kinda glad it was Henry they’ve pushed to this level, truth be told. He deserves it.
Segment of the Night: Opener
Not really many segments tonight shockingly. Kinda refreshing. Wrestling-oriented Raw for once
.
Match of the Night: Tie between Cena vs. Miz & Unified Tag Titles
Both of these matches really displayed experience vs. future, as opposed to experience vs. youth. The Colons held their own against one of the greatest tag wrestlers of all time, and another good tag wrestler in Jericho, both of whom are among the best solo heels in the history of the ‘E. And Miz really impressed against Cena, and I really hope he gets a clean win in the coming weeks and this feud continues, because they’re working good together right now.
Overall Rating: ***
Like I said, wrestling-oriented. A couple weak spots, but Divas don’t weigh down the night, and Show/Kofi actually builds for a future, and like I said, I’m interested to see how Kofi works with a superheavyweight, because it’s something we haven’t seen out of him. Orton’s selling his beatdown well, and this guest host thing might actually be refreshing for a while (only a matter of time until someone appoints themselves full-time GM if it does get stale). Glad that Henry came out and displayed himself (he’ll definitely be a target for taking the money and not doing the deed, no denying it was MDM’s work). Setup for Triple H vs. Cena is cool, I’m looking forward to them working a match, but I’d rather they have buried this feud with 3 Stages of Hell instead of carrying it on further, which is the only reason for even having Triple H in this. They can’t abandon Cena/Miz yet. Good show overall though.
Opening Segment – Vince McMahon & Guest Host Dave Batista
