There's been enough times where I've chosen a song thinking "this has mass appeal, I could win with this" only to get smacked in the voting, that I now just follow my gut and choose a song that I really like, and if it has mass appeal then that's even better, but it's not something I'm prioritizing anymore. Especially when it's ultimately a matter of matchups. There are plenty of reasonably obscure picks every round, and usually just one or two obvious homeruns, that make things harder to predict.
