The CEO of UnitedHealth was fatally shot in the chest Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown in what police say was a targeted attack.

Brian Thompson, 50, was at the hotel at around 6:46 a.m. arriving early for a conference when a masked man allegedly waiting for him fired at the CEO repeatedly and fled eastbound off of 6th Avenue, police sources told The Post.

Thomas was rushed to the Mt Sinai Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, one of the nation’s largest health insurers, was fatally shot outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning in what New York’s police commissioner called a “brazen targeted attack.”

The executive, Brian Thompson, 50, was shot just after 6:45 a.m. at the New York Hilton Midtown on Avenue of the Americas near 54th Street, according to the police. The commissioner, Jessica Tisch, said the gunman waited for Mr. Thompson outside the hotel, ignoring other passers-by, before opening fire and hitting him in the back and leg.

Investigators were still searching for the gunman, who fled along the Avenue of the Americas, and was last spotted in Central Park. A surveillance image released by the police showed a person in a black hooded garment and wearing a backpack pointing a weapon, and another showed the person fleeing on what the police said was an electric Citi Bike. Neither image showed the gunman’s face.

Police are looking for the man who fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan in what they called a targeted attack. Law enforcement sources tell CNN that police have searched a hostel on the Upper West Side of Manhattan where they believe the suspect may have been staying.

• The words “delay” and “depose” were found on a live round and shell casing, law enforcement sources told CNN on Thursday, responding to an earlier ABC News report. Authorities also found a phone and bottle of water that may have been dropped by the gunman as he ran through the alley.

• The gunman shot Thompson outside a hotel Wednesday before fleeing on foot through an alley and then on an electric bike. Detectives believe the shooter operated in a way that suggested he was an experienced marksman.

• The shooter’s motive is unclear. But a source told CNN that UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, America’s largest insurance company, was aware of concerning threats against its high-level executives.

The man suspected of gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel took a taxi to the Port Authority bus facility at 178th Street and boarded a bus out of New York City following the shooting, according to police.

The unidentified man remains at large in the wake of Wednesday's attack, which was described by police as "brazen, targeted" and "premeditated."

Police have not recovered the shooter's backpack and are searching Central Park on Friday afternoon, police said.

We're so blessed in Britain to not have to pay for operations. A NHS prescription is like £10. But Tony Blair brought in the same style of America that you can lay for operations but it costs more than some earn in a lifetime and end up in debt.
