A former MLW World Heavyweight Champion has requested to be released from the promotion.

Fightful reports that Alex Hammerstone has asked to be released from his MLW contract. Though Hammerstone hasn't been informed of MLW's decision, Fightful writes that -- as of now -- MLW does not intend to grant Hammerstone's request.

Hammerstone held the MLW World Heavyweight Championship from October 2021 to July 2023. He won the title from Jacob Fatu and lost it to Alex Kane.

In December 2021, Hammerstone signed a new multi-year MLW contract.

Hammerstone's contract reportedly runs until the end of 2025.

Fightful notes that the relationship between Hammerstone and MLW has become "frayed." With Hammerstone wanting to leave the promotion, a buyout was brought up when the two sides had been in communication earlier this year. MLW wants to retain Hammerstone and has been in contact with him.

The report notes that, from MLW's perspective, Hammerstone's "motivation decreased when he was booked to lose the world title to Alex Kane earlier this year."

Hammerstone's most recent match was when he dropped the title to Kane.

Hammerstone is also a one-time MLW National Openweight Champion.

Earlier in his MLW run, Hammerstone was part of The Dynasty with MJF and Richard Holliday. MJF is the current AEW World Champion. Holliday, who departed MLW earlier this year, recently took part in a WWE tryout.

So he signed a brand new deal when they put the belt on him in 2021 and then when he’s asked to lose the belt after holding it for two years, he now wants to be let go? I’m kind of with a MLW on this one.

People talking about him potentially going to TNA... considering the circumstances, I'd rather not lol

why would you publicly announce it if it wasn't approved yet? is it a tactic hoping since it's public they can't say no?

If it hasn’t been approved yet, then yes, that’s most likely what he’s thinking. If he publicly confirms it and tweets at court he’ll just accept it rather than be look at like the bad guy.

If Court and hammer can come to a mutual agreement about his parting. This is definitely who I think TNA should be picking up next.

I will say though, it’s pretty wild to me if he’s trying to get out halfway through a contract because he had to drop the belt.

I read that there was talk of a buyout earlier so it may happen. I understand the promoters pov that a guy who wants out after his long run is lame. On the wrestlers side, what really does he have left to do in MLW and how many more bumps do you want to take in a company you reached the tippy top of. Certainly can respect both povs and hope they come to a resolution, doesn't sound like Hammerstone has any ill will towards MLW, just feels he's done there

Saw that Lace Anoia is also asking for his release

I can certainly see that point of you as well but my only contention would be is if you’re thinking about leaving MLW after your run I would just then tell court that upfront be like I don’t wanna signa four-year deal. Can we do a two-year deal or what have you. I do hope though that they can just come to a mutual agreement

I mean Jacob Fatu held the belt for 800+ days while Hammerstone only had it for 640+. They had that build that Hammer would have been the face of the company and then all of a sudden he's not. I'd be mad too.

I’m just gonna only assume you’re being facetious about someone being mad they only had the belt for 640 days.

This guy has hotdog skin and looks like Shane Douglas when he was heavy on the gas.
